Sustainability

it means the world to us

NOM EAT is passionate about reducing food waste, cutting carbon, and protecting critical water resources.

“I am choosing foods that are better for the planet.”

“I am choosing foods that are better for the planet.”

“I am buying products with less plastic.”

“I am buying products with less plastic.”

“I am reducing my carbon footprint.”

“I am reducing my carbon footprint.”

We believe that the production of plant-based meat products saves planetary resources, reduces the need for intensive animal farming, puts significantly less strain on the environment, and has a long-term positive effect on climate change.

Findings from the EAT-Lancet Commission (Willet et al. 2019) report show that plant-based diets and substantial reductions in animal sources of foods lessen the impact on the environment. For example, a plant-based diet reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by up to 80%.

NOM EAT’s range of plant-powered vegan chicken and fish products can significantly help reduce greenhouse gas emissions:

NOM EAT’s range of plant-powered vegan fish products eliminates concerns with wild-caught seafood such as Limited Stocks, Bycatch, and Habitat Damage.

*Bycatch refers to “discarded catch of marine species and unobserved mortality due to a direct encounter with fishing vessels and gear.” These unintentionally caught animals often suffer injuries or die.

The NOM EAT Plant Protein provides a significant reduction in environmental impacts compared with full meat equivalents:

NOM EAT 100% plant based chicken and fish products make a significant contribution to reducing climate change, fossil depletion and agricultural land use, without the difficulty of having to change consumer diets.

LESS FOOD WASTE

NOM EAT products are frozen to reduce food waste.

Research published in the British Food Journal shows that frozen foods generate 47% less food waste in the home compared to ambient and chilled food, equivalent to three million tonnes of household waste per year.

The research also discovered that greenhouse gas emissions could also be reduced by 2.4m tonnes a year if households incorporated frozen foods into more efficient meal planning.

SMART PACKAGING

100% of NOM EAT packaging is fully recyclable or compostable.

At the center of the packaging waste problem is the linear ‘take-make-dispose’ model of consumption which means products get manufactured, bought, used briefly, and then thrown away.

As a food company, we’re acutely aware of the causes and consequences of this linear model. It is unsustainable in a world in which 14% of the plastic packaging used globally makes its way to recycling plants, and only 9% is actually recycled – while a third is left in fragile ecosystems, and 40% ends up in a landfill.

Moving towards a circular economy—where we not only use less packaging but design the packaging so it can be reused, recycled or composted—will mean less plastic in our shared environment.
